Right or wrong?"Respect the country YOU have chosen to live in by being discreet about your religion and culture."

Does 'respect' actually define being secretive about your religious beliefs and origin, or does it mean have respect for others around you who may not want to know or hear about your beliefs? Or even both?

We live in a multi-cultural society where we all interact with one another on a daily basis. Learning from each other. Surely that's a good thing, right? Causing delays to people's journeys is worth the wait when you'll be getting cleaner, bigger and cooler tubes in return.

Weekend and evening closures can be a right pain, but I have to say Boris ain't such a nob after all ;) I happened to jump on a tube on Tuesday afternoon and as I got on, I couldn't help but stare around like it was my first time on the tube. Brighter lights, new COMFORTABLE seats, and best of all were the wider carriages which gave me enough space to move away from people's unpleasant body odour at the end of the day.

Let's hope we see more of these trains around on more Underground lines. Over populated London is desperate for better public transport and I think we've waiting long enough. More new trains will be running on tracks in the new year and hopefully we'll get a chance to enjoy them more! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-36607049242810971662009-10-28T22:55:00.008+00:002009-10-28T23:26:52.126+00:00Promote Vegetarianism"Eating meat could become as socially unacceptable within a generation as drink-driving."

A very interesting article I came across the other day. Stop eating meat, cows harm the planet. Confused? So was I.

Apparently climate change experts say that meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. Dietary shifts are needed to halve greenhouse gases caused by methane-producing livestock such as cows. Does this really mean giving up meat altogether?! I personally know some people who would faint after reading this.

Singer and animal rights activist Chrissie Hynde is determind, and called for cruelty-free dairy farming worldwide.

Meat consumption is wasteful of resources including water and land, not to mention secondary issues like the increased medical costs associated with eating a meat-based diet. So would we all be better off giving it up?

There are entire cultures representing millions of people who have lived and thrived for centuries without meat, which is enough evidence that human beings do not "need" meat to satisy their taste buds or to survive. In fact, the evidence weighs heavily in the other direction: The hazards of a meat diet in comparison to the benefits of a vegeterian diet are well known in the medical and scientific community. Health, animal cruelty, and environmental issues could be alleviated if everyone ate a vegeterian diet.

I really do hope i'm not the only one with this view..Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-56659822104258961422009-10-22T00:43:00.003+01:002009-10-22T01:08:03.585+01:00What happens next..?Having an interest in the political crisis taking place in our country at present, I thought it would be a good idea to attend a debate taking place at my university about the upcoming general elections.

City University’s new Head of Journalism, Professor George Brock, who was hosting the event said: “The members of this panel will help to shape what you see and hear about the long election campaign that has just begun. Find out what they know. Find out what they think."

Walking in with an open mind was a positive start. It wasn’t long before the lecture theatre was almost full with under and post grads. The City University Journalism department is huge as it is, so I guess I was expecting some interesting questions being put forward to the panel.

The panel was made up by some of the UK’s most prominent political journalists, including Sam Coates (Chief Political Correspondent, The Times), Steve Richards (Chief Political Commentator, The Independent) and Pippa Crerar (Political Correspondent, Evening Standard), to debate the runners and riders in the general election race.

It started off pretty boring with Pippa Crerar so far away from the mike, you could hardly hear her. Then Steve Richards came to the mike and lit up the whole lecture theatre. His loud voice and strong views made a lot of the audience nod to his points. He came up with some plausible suggestions towards the Labour and Conservative party which stirred up some views from the audience. Concluding with Sam Coates and his ideas, a prediction was made of the election results by each panellist.

Some of their predictions made sense and in reality, could actually happen. But as far as I’m aware, political outcomes are always doubtful to the very end.

Many people came up with different points, such as why has The Sun made its decision to openly support the Tories during campaign? Has blogging changed political journalism? And has the MP’s expenses scandal really messed stuff for the outcome of these elections? All questions which may seem easy to answer, but difficult to understand what’s really behind it.

Overall I think the debate went well. It broadened my knowledge of the elections and what could actually happen. But I think I’m left with the question “What do the Tories actually stand for?” We seem to be wanting a way out from Labour, but a way in with the Tories may not necessarily be the answer...Hmm!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-41463683500964897792009-10-21T18:24:00.004+01:002009-10-21T20:20:44.459+01:00Charitable Causes - Get Involved. It is a popular saying that: “To the world you are just one person. But to one person, you could be the world.”

Despite what we may often think, we are in an incredibly fortunate position. Studying at university is out of reach for so many people our age, yet still a major part of their dreams. With a little help and support however, we have the ability to make those dreams come true.

There are a wide range of charitable causes for students to get involved with to help make a difference, you just need a little direction. Here are three simple ways of supporting children’s charities, and making a difference:

Shopping – Helping Handbags was set up by Melora Johnson, a Londoner, after reading an article about a disabled children’s home in Bulgaria where the children, aged from just a few months to 18 years, were brutally neglected. Her idea was to design a handbag and sell it online, with all proceeds going to the Baba programme run by Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children Trust. The Tabitha, £150, comes in caramel, purple and metallic, and is available at www.helpinghandbags.co.uk

Mentoring – Kids Co. Mentoring was established by the Kids Company charity, based in London. The innovative and flexible mentoring programme is ideal for students, as it involves just one weekly meeting with your allocated mentee, at a time and place of your choice. This can be an exceptionally rewarding experience as you work with young people to help them achieve their goals, build confidence and self esteem, and reach their potential. Often with so many young people all that’s missing is that little bit of hope, which you can give them. More information on training and enrolment into the Kids Co. Mentoring programme is available at www.kidsco.org.uk/mentor

Partying –Trekstock was founded by Sophie Epstone in 2006 to raise awareness about the Teenage Cancer Trust. Parties, gigs and events are held for Trekstock, and all proceeds are donated to the Trust. People of all ages suffer from cancer, but the Teenage Cancer Trust specializes in young people, alike you and I, who are in need. Organising an event for Trekstock could lead to anything from a breakthrough in research to a simple smile for a patient. Either is entirely worth it. For information on how to get involved, visit: http://www.trekstock.com/

Actively becoming involved with charity work will not only benefit the children on the receiving end of your efforts, but will also enhance your own CV, especially causes like Kids Co. Mentoring and Trekstock. It is vital for the future of the children who depend on such causes for people like us to apply ourselves and get involved, so be it a donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charity, or a bracket of time for an organised cause, it’s important we make the effort. If we don't do something ourselves, then we cannot expect a change.

Visit http://www.leapanywhere.co.uk/ to learn about new and exciting ways of helping others. To these kids, one person could make all the difference. That one person could be you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-76322090801992840272009-08-24T01:28:00.012+01:002009-08-24T01:51:54.747+01:00* TO THE BLACK *

Bienvenue.. It was a good way of exploring and finding many more interesting shops. The backstreet streetwear shops were the best ones, ace stuff and cheaper than London. We should've gone to the beach that day but totally got lost with all our exploring! Anyway, strangely enough we used to get hungry at the exact same time and thought of having tapas! By this time we had walked to Passeig de Gracia and found a nice tapas bar there. It's hard to pick out the quality places because there are hundreds of places to eat! BARCELONA. I'm sure many people are thinking 'what's the damn hype about?' but trust me, even I was like that before the visit.

Nandini and I were planning a quick get away for a long time now but everytime we were ready to book, something would get in the way. We finally decided to go to Barcelona as we had heard many good things about it from people who recently went. The offer was open to anyone who wanted to join us, but I guess it worked out to be much better that it was only me and her, "BARE JOKES." It probably would've been good if Saj and Raj came along too, but I guess we'll leave that to next time ;)

Okay so we book a week in Barcelona. We got tickets to Girona which isn't very far from the heart of Barcelona and we would enjoy the bus ride too. As soon as we arrived it was POURING down with rain. It was weird because in Birmingham it was nice warm and sunny.. I think we brought the rain with us. OOPZ. The best thing was it was still warm so walking around in hoody chasing after a taxi was perfect. We got a taxi to Selva De Mar where our hotel was just before midnight! We done the hotel booking online too and got lucky with a great deal at a 4 star Vincci Condal Mar hotel.

So we walk into the hotel and it's DEAD quiet because we're sooo late. Their transport system is mighty healthier than ours (everybody repeat after me "Teh-Jeh-Veh" or "TGV") and Mr Gustav Eiffel was a genius (I mean...cam'orrrn, just look at it). So with such everyday objects of brilliant design it's a no brainer that the people behind ATYPYK are coming up with various ways to creatively spend your ££s or €€s.

Who knows why it's called ATYPYK, I really haven't done my research that far, I was just entranced by the objets d'art...

Some are more frivolous than others...I mean why would it be a good idea to buy a gold plated "security tag" brooch, or a gold plated necklace in the shape of macaroni pasta (takes you back to childhood and the ever long list of decorative possibilities for pasta) but it's a GOOD IDEA, a potentially USELESS idea, but a good idea none the less, and I'm a graphic designer student so therefore THE IDEA IS KING!! (Imagine me pumping my fist clutching a 2B pencil violently into the air with a pad of A2 layout paper tucked under my other arm with the backdrop of those of people cheering - Che Guevera for the visual generation perhaps...)

There are more practical items though, my favourites being the coasters in the shape of spilled water or the restaurant table cloth sketchbook...I'm sure you can find something that you will really, really, unexplainably, want. Knock yourself out children!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRdUzMp9RZ8pW3oRVyUAnYLsOQnf9Oh-rLmo1vKbCmPbC4azhRhPOSm0_rbbiwpgUZFZXZ7w02h8aHgdgBCAiaD4qQ2ULCvRJnDo041uIA0Sm_7zSeVoiitvTGjFcY2IbxggnRnpPbllDd/s320/tag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307207327498672242" />

Something about it...just...makes...sense...?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-80112981713127727092009-02-17T23:36:00.003+00:002009-02-18T00:15:36.164+00:00100% YES!
Yes it's 100% Reggae, Soul and Funk Selection!

Catch this fine event every second Sunday of each month at Cafe 1001 from 3pm-11pm, presented by Soul Jazz Records Sound System. I haven't posted in ages...my bad, my bad.

Wellllll one of the first things I would like to put on my wishlist would be some hotness from Married to the Mob (marriedtothemobnyc.com), their Spring 09 collection is painfully seductive as usual...

If you don't know, MTTM is a New York outfit that are quite skilled at providing garments that make you wanna up sticks and move to New York, at least to get your "shop" on. But unfortunately we can't afford to do that, but you can still buy their produce online (if you can afford to do that, not that their ridiculously expensive, but everywhere I look I seem to read "broke").

You might of seen one of "sneakers" they collab'd on (so far with Nike and Reebok to the best of my knowledge), and since for some reason I can't upload some beautiful pictures of their garments and fab styling, I'll leave you with a picture of their Reebok collab (my favourite one) and tell you to head on over to www.marriedtothemobnyc.com and check out Spring 09 for yourself, it will be well worth it. Even if you haven't got mon-aaay.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-60459704669225358602009-02-04T16:41:00.022+00:002009-02-05T00:03:43.155+00:00It's a SNOW BLOG.
OH MAAAAYN.

I think we'll all agree when I say, I have never seen so much snow in England in my entire life!

It was absolutely beautiful! Updating facebook status for starters!

Anyway so we made our way to valley park, purley way. The nearest and most convenient cinema for us! Our usual lateness, we already had missed about 5mins of the beginning. We got sat down and straight away got caught up in the story. Some of the scenes were amazing and proper hit you, well it had that impact on me. Jamal and Salim, two brothers who are born in the slums are shown to grow up together despite losing their mum at a young age because of a religious uprising. They live and work their way through India jumping from job to job just to earn some money.

Salim, the older brother, is obsessed with money and being in control, whereas Jamal, the younger brother, is slightly naive with a sweeter character. Jamal falls in love with a girl called Latika who has been his childhood friend. They get separated at a young age when the brothers are escaping from a group of gangsters operating in India. It is complete madness and definitely the most upsetting bit of the whole film.. :'(

In complete bollywood style, the brothers grow up in one quick scene which was SO predictable. I remember whispering to my friend ‘I bet they’ll grow up’ AHA. So they grow up, are suddenly well intelligent and can speak fluent English (DUNNO HOW THAT HAPPENED?!). Jamal decides to go look for Latika who he got separated from some time back. It’s great how he still remembers her and would most probably do anything to find her again, but it is somehow a little unrealistic how he tracks her down. Hmm..

After that, Jamal gets separated from his brother Salim at some point and starts doing his own thing really. Sometime goes by and Jamal weirdly gets in touch with his brother again! Jamal still remembers what his brother did when he took Latika away from him and doesn’t feel like he can forgive him. He has a feeling that his brother knows where Latika is, but Salim doesn’t mention anything for a reason. Jamal still has so much love for her and follows Salim to where Latika is and bumps into her again. They want to run away together but many things hold Latika back and sacrifies her love for the safety of them both.

Jamal gets himself onto the show, ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.’ This is where the legendary Anil Kapoor is introduced! Many people may not agree, but I think Anil Kapoor is bloody amazing. He’s well cute for an old guy (LOL) and is a great actor! During the gameshow, Anil Kapoor suspects that Jamal might be cheating and gets him arrested after he answers the 1 million rupee question.

The film shows Jamal telling his story to the police officer, and relates each question from the gameshow to his life proving that he knew all the correct answers and wasn’t cheating. It really felt like a Bollywood film but in English, and no songs. Well actually, it was a mixture of Hindi and English, but still.. Does that even make sense? You have to watch it to understand!

Everything works out in the end, when Latika and Jamal are reunited again, for good this time! A lovely happy ending which definitely brought a smile to the audience’s face :)

All in all, I’d say it was one of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time and Dev Patel's role as Jamal was played brilliantly. The story line was impressive, even though to people who may not be familiar with Bollywood films might find it was a little fast? Everything was so REAL about the film and definitely received tons of positive feedback! Grrrreat work!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180658956404741143.post-11886896185875177352009-01-15T21:13:00.002+00:002009-01-15T21:18:00.095+00:00AHAHAHAhaha oh shit :S
This man once made me laugh..
